For nearly 20 years George and Mary Bartol supported the Arizona Arts Award, created in 1987 to advance the arts in Arizona. The Bartol family donated over $500,000 over the years toward this goal. Through this award, each year an artist receives an unrestricted award of $25,000 to support their work.
The Community Foundation contracted with WriteForChange to produce a retrospective publication that would explore the impact of this award on artists’ lives and careers, and on the larger arts and civic community.
Susan Feathers created an interview questionnaire with Barbara Brown, Senior Programs Officer and current steward of the Arizona Arts Award. Over 55 artists out of 88 were located and interviewed in person or by phone. The interviews turned-up a treasure of stories and information, much richer than expected. We learned about the daily struggle of artists to keep their work alive, and far-reaching consequences of receiving recognition and the monetary reward under this initiative.
In November of 2005 a fifty-page publication, The Gift of Time and Space (PDF), was presented to Mary Bartol and sent to nominees and recipients’ of the Arizona Arts Award. This publication received a silver award for excellence in communications by the 2006 Wilmer Sheilds Rich Awards Program in April of 2006. Read the press release. (PDF)
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona will use the publication to encourage potential donors by demonstrating the impact of giving, while the donor gained a valuable record of the contribution made to the arts community.
WriteForChange will continue to work with the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona to utilize the publication to advance philanthropy in southern Arizona.
